One of my jobs here at PopCap is creating — or at least helping smarter people create — game taglines. Usually, after we’ve decided on a tagline, we totally forget about the other ideas. I mean, for every “Get ready to soil your plants,” there are a hundred “It’s plants fighting zombies… duh!” So, by the time we’re finished, we’re ready to just move on with life.
But once in a while, there are a few losers in the tagline races that we just can’t forget. Not that we actually think any of them are better… we just can’t forget them. Sometimes, it’s because they’re brilliant. But most of the time, it’s because they’re absolutely terrible.
Here are a few of our favorite rejected tag lines:
Plants vs. Zombies
Horticulture meets horror culture.
Spades meet Hades in the battle of the mulch!
Seed no evil, fear no evil!
PvZ for Windows Phone 7
Play the funk out of it.
It’s got unicorns AND rainbows!
Acid not included!
Bookworm Adventures Volume 2
The worm abides.
The spelling sensation just got Goosed! (Because… you know… Mother Goose is in the game.)
Third time’s a charm!
Bounce ’til dawn!
Extreme Fever IS Contagious!
Do you have the stones for Zuma Blitz?
You’ll play ’til you croak!
Time to torch the tikis!
The ribbeting sequel to the ball-blasting classic. (Oh, wait… that IS the tagline. How’d that one sneak in there?)
That’s all for now. Do you have any favorites? Any suggestions? As you can see, I could use a little help.
